Just in at Custom Quilling two new silhouette punches from McGill.

McGill Lever Silhouette Punches create shapes with interior cutouts for a delicate see-through lacey effect.

Silhouettes come in McGill's ergonomic LEVER punches that are easy and fun to use.

Layer Silhouettes over coordinating colors for unique 2-tone effects.Create 3D embellishments by layering and folding back portions of the shapes.
Use with a variety of papers and decorate with chalks, glitter, inking effects, acrylics and more.
Add stencil effects to projects by blotting color through the Silhouette interior cut outs.
Silhouettes are perfect for custom cards, invitations, scrapbook pages, home décor projects and more.
Action: Slide paper in, push lever down then release, slide paper out of punch and lift shape out of paper.

Free Quilled Wheat Pattern

Although we are having an rare October snowstorm here in the northeast US, here is a re-share of a wheat pattern.

Supplies
1/8” quilling paper gold & tan
Cardstock in gold
Chalk in gold
Adhesive
Quilling Tool
Scissors
Card Preparation
Optional step: Cut then fold cardstock into desired card size. Cut an oval out of scrap paper; place the paper from which the oval was cut out on the card and lightly chalk the inside oval with gold. The edges of the card may also be chalked.

Assembly
For each stalk of wheat roll 7 - 8” strips of gold, forming a teardrop, leaving a tail of about 1/2”.
Cut the tail at an angle so that a point is form at the end; slightly curve the tail to the outside.
Glue shapes to a 3” strip of gold on edge, starting at the top and placing three shapes on each side. Making sure the curved tail faces out. Repeat the process for the other two stalks.
Cut each stem at an angle, glue together at stems, add a strip of 2” tan with the end cut to a point to form two leaves. Curve and add to each side of the stem group. Wrap and knot all stems with a scrap piece of tan paper, cut ends at angle. Lightly glue the finished wheat to center of oval.

My Very First Quilling Project

Since I posted yesterday the story of the start of my quilling journey, I thought I'd share my very first project.

This is from the kit my mom had bought, Wedding Invitation Border by Barbara Maddox ©1973 for Quill Art Inc.
Barbara was my first introduction to the world of quilling through her wonderful selection of kits.
Long before the ease of the internet I would spend hours on the phone both in New Jersey and Florida searching for stores that carried quilling supplies. Then if I was fortunate enough to find any, drive for miles to purchase them, finally out of desperation I resorted to mail order.

When the kits would arrive I pounced on them, lost for hours in bits of paper being twirled around the hat pin. These kits were my inspiration, giving me the ability to begin my own designs.
That very first hat pin from the wedding kit was with me up until just a few years ago when it disappeared along with the project I was working on during a demo I was giving. I was heart broken! To this day I still reach for a hat pin as my first tool of choice.

The frame was part of a set my dad gave me as a gift, it was not my taste but I have never had the heart to replace it. He worked with my mom in a frame shop as a hobby, he loved working with his hands. It was also where I worked part time for a period of time while in high school.

When I look at this first quilling attempt today, I see all the flaws... way too tight tension! But I also see what changed my life forever, a passion for quilling that has lasted all these years.

What a difference a year makes!

This post is personal, although it does relate to quilling on some level. Many of you know that my mom suffered a major heart attack a year ago November, I posted about it here in Quilling, Children, and Christmas Reflections.

Since I have received inquires about her health I thought I'd update everyone.
This past weekend we celebrated her 83rd birthday! Here she is with my oldest son, I hope I look this good at her age!

Although Doug spent hours sitting by her side during her hospital stay, she has no memory of him or our youngest Drew being there. To her the last time she saw Doug was on her 80th birthday, so her present this year was a visit from both her grandsons... she was thrilled!

Mom has come a long way, she is back living in her home, we are fortunate to live only a few house away. Although is she is walking a little slower and no longer driving, her quality of life is so much more than we ever expected, almost as it was.

And how does this relate to quilling you ask?
When I was planning my wedding I was living in Florida but the ceremony was to be held in my home state of New Jersey. Arriving home for a planning session my mom hands me a cupcake tray filled with little bits of paper.

"OK, mom I know you love to bake but what the heck is this?"

Mom: "I saw this kit to make paper flowers around your invitation and frame it for a keepsake. I thought I'd make it for you, but I HATE doing this!"

Well, I took one look at those paper strips, fell in love, and as the say the rest is history!

This all happened back in 1975.... as much as I love to quill my mom has never touched another quilling strip again!

Free Husking Shamrock Card by Heidi Bishop

Here's a card by Heidi Bishop designed while she was a member of the Custom Quilling Design Team. She used a technique called husking, spreuer or wheatear, which just means wrapping strips around an onion holder!

To make this card you'll need:
4 ¼” x 5 ½” yellow cardstock for the card
Yellow cream decorative paper
A printed “Happy St Patrick’s Day
Spring green two tone quilling strips
White pearl paper
5 yellow crystals
Small flower punch
Onion holder

Directions
Make 3 dark green leaves: Make a seven looped leave around prongs 6, 5, 4, 3 using alternate side looping technique.
Make a dark green 3 looped stem around prongs 4 and 3 using alternate side looping technique.
Repeat for light green shamrock
Make 3, 4 looped leaves around prongs 2, 3, 4, and 5 using the wheatear technique.
Make 1, 3” trumpet coil for the stem
Punch and shape 5 white flowers and add crystals.
Attach text to decorative paper then to card stock.
Using picture as a guide, glue into place elements.

New Tools For Quilling

Some new tools have arrived at Custom Quilling, hopefully this will make your quilling much easier!

First up is a spiral tool, this is flexible stainless steel spiral tool that is resistant to breaking enabling a longer length of spiral to be made.

Next, for all the fans of hand fringing.

The fringing clip will old your strip while you snip up to the metal. No more strips that have been snipped through!
To save time more than one strip can be cut at once.

Then next in the series of fingertip tools is the Tweezers, squeeze to open and let go to close...it’s that easy!

Quilling with Gold and Silver Quill Trim Paper

Here's another blast from the past written by Ann Martin Custom Quilling's Advisor for the Custom Quilling Newsletter.

Perhaps you are wondering what to do with the 1/8" quill trim paper that is a beautiful metallic
gold or silver on one side, but white on the other. Wedding bells? Christmas bells? Tiny pegs? Yes, all that and more! With a bit of creativity you'll be able to use these versatile papers in many ways. If you carefully spread an even coating of glue on the white side of a strip, glue the back of a second strip to the first, you can then roll coils or scrolls as usual. Allow the glue to dry completely before attempting to roll. If there are a small openings where there wasn't enough glue, use a straight pin to apply a tiny amount in the gaps.

Try outlining colored teardrops with quill trim to use as butterfly wings or wrap a short length around a closed coil to use as the center of a flower. Apply glue with a glue stick to the back of a strip and press it in place on a card front as a border. For a different look, glue two strips together and crimp when dry. The double thickness will prevent the paper from turning into confetti when it is run through the crimper. Crimped trim makes a pretty border on a card front and surprisingly can be very easily glued around curves on a circle or oval aperture card or picture frame mat.

Cut a strip of trim paper in half and glue it down the middle of a 1/8" strip of another color. Use it to make a pretty looped bow. With a little practice it is possible to make very tiny fringed flowers and folded roses with the 1/8" quill trim papers as well.

Entering Quilling Competitions

Entering Quilling Competitions Can Be A Rewarding Experience... by Doreen Coreman

Entering Paper Quilling into Competitions and Art Shows can be such a wonderful experience. I started quilling in October of 2001, and entered my first major project just 9 months after in July 2002 at The Calgary Stampede Western Arts and Crafts Show. It was a pair of quilled swans from a pattern in one of Malinda Johnston’s books. I happily took a blue 2nd place ribbon, and was just thrilled, and couldn’t wait to enter another piece the next year. In 2003, I made another framed piece, again from Malinda Johnston’s book. It was the Carolina Wren, and again, I took second place. I soon realized after these 2 second place ribbons, that as long as I kept using non-original patterned designs, I probably wouldn’t get more than 2nd place wins. In 2004, I decided to do some designs that were all my own original pieces. What a difference that made!!! I entered 3 pieces; an 8 x 10 framed quilled peacock, a birthday card and a friendship thank you card. My peacock took 3 awards (1st in class, 1st in section and section winner overall medal), my birthday card got a 2nd place, and my thank you card got 2 awards (1st in class, 4th in section). I was so proud of my accomplishment in such a short time and very pleased at how much I learned a long the way. So earlier this year I was sent an invitation to compete in the Masters Division (the highest level of Competition), because I had won 2 section awards last year I was both excited and scared, as I didn’t really think I was ready to be in the Masters. I did another 3 entries that were all original pieces; A 3D life size Blue Morpho butterfly under a glass dome in which I cut every strip to 1/16” wide and painted the underside including all of its markings (1st place ribbon, and a medal), another Thank You card (3rd place ribbon), and a Christmas card. I was so nervous, but I was determined to do well, so was very proud to have won again.
There can be many benefits to entering and I have learned so much through my experiences. The show I do every year has the potential for almost a million people to see my work! Estimates are between 500 & 700 thousand who go through the exhibits out of about 1.3 million who attend the Stampede every year. That in itself is very rewarding to know that so many can be potentially exposed to see this art form! Winning the awards is an added bonus as I can have that on the backs of my cards, and on any business cards and printed materials. People who are looking to buy cards, and gifts seem to be quite impressed when they read about the awards I’ve won. They then realize it isn’t just a craft but an actual Art Form which is part of the reason I keep competing. Also, it has really helped to stretch my imagination and grow in an area of designing my own pieces. There may even be various shows that may have prize money involved as well, although I have not been involved in any of these so can’t say much about them. In many competitions, the judges have a set of criteria to follow. So whether they’ve heard of quilling or not they can still judge it according to what their criteria is.

Please remember this is based on my experiences in competing and although it may be different in other places here are some helpful tips for entering shows and competitions:
Before you register for any competition, contests, or art shows, make sure you are aware of all the rules and guidelines. This is to protect you. Some may want to keep your work after the show, so you may have to decide if you want to make something that won’t be returned. This may also influence the complexity and size of your entry. So always check before hand if they will be keeping entries, or returning them. When you’re registering if you’re asked to give a description of your project go into detail. Tell them how long it took you to make, the sorts of papers you used and how much ( I give them an estimated total of how many feet of paper are in the project), include various techniques, and especially tell them if it is your design or not. The more you can explain about it the better. Plan your project and visualize how you want the finished piece to look. If you can, design your own project to keep it original. Designing a project can take longer than the quilling but it is well worth it. Judges will always look for originality first over patterns. Since I first started entering my work I have really seen a lot more entries every year, which is wonderful to see. I recognize work that is from patterns, and note that they are usually given 2nd or 3rd place awards. However, if you are new to quilling and not comfortable with making your own original piece, don’t fret use a pattern, as it is still a good experience and if you make a good quality piece you may still be awarded first place, as the judges may just love how you made the piece. Be as neat as possible no glue marks showing and not too much of a crimp in the center of your coils, as they seem to like the small centers that the needle tool, or hand rolling gives. Also the type of frames, display cases, and stands may have an effect on judging. If you have a frame that has slight flaws, they may notice this or notice if your mat is slightly off center. Ask when taking your piece in if you can have your contact info displayed with your piece. Some will let you and some won’t but it never hurts to ask. I know from experience, as they never use to let us in the past but this year they did and I didn’t know, so I didn’t have any contact info displayed. Whether you win or not be very proud that you were able to have your quilling on display as that is one of the best the best parts of the whole experience. I have had people come up to me at Christmas Craft sales, and tell me they saw my pieces displayed. Wow! What a great feeling! I hope if anyone has an opportunity to enter a show/competition they at least do so once. I have learned so much, and gained so much experience by doing show pieces, that is has really helped improve my quilling and show many our beautiful art form.

I was an active participant of the 60's & 70's and all that it involved. Vividly remembering the day John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King were shot. As the years past, with unrest spreading, I became disheartened.

Yesterday I felt my heart lighten... could there finally be a change coming?
I have hope for the future again.

This quote I first heard in the fall from a Jay-Z song, I am not sure he was the first or the last.
I know I’ve seen different versions floating around the net ...

Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk.
Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run.
Obama's running so we all can fly.

Obama ran and won so now working together we all maybe able to fly.
Once again I can say with meaning....

Free Quilled Wild Rose Pattern

Here's a pattern to make quick and simple Wild Roses from 1/4" or wider quilling paper.

Supplies:

Quilling paper, color of your choice
Quilling tool
Beads or glitter
Glue
Scissors

To make the roses:

9 -1/2” pieces rose 3/8” quilling paper cut to point at one end.
4 -1/2” pieces peach 3/8” quilling paper cut to point at one end.

Slightly roll both edges of the uncut end.
For the larger rose glue six curled pieces in a circle on a small square of scrap paper for the bottom layer, then glue four together for the center making sure the folds facing up.
Glue three pearls to middle.
The bud or smaller rose is four pieces with three pearls.
Add quilled or punched leaves to finish the design.

Hints:
For a different look try making the roses with the folded tips facing
down.
Gold or silver beads, small quilled strips, or glitter glue may also be
used for the centers.

Chalk the tips or center of the rose.

Free Pattern ~ Poinsettia Gift Embellishment

Punch 3 Kikyou flowers (or any similar punch) for each flower. Lightly emboss (rub with a round ended pen or tool) outer rim of all petals, making it cup slightly. Turn over (embossed side down) layer and glue the flowers with the petals alternating. Place a small dot of glue in center, add three gold beads. Repeat for remaining two colors.

Punch 3 Large and 3 Medium Holly leaves with stem. Or quilled holly leaves may be used. Lightly score vines on all holly leaves, by gently drawing your pin from the point of the leaf to the stem then from the inner vine to the outside point.

Punch one 1” circle or use scrap paper.
Glue the three larger flowers to the circle, placing as close as possible.
Glue 3 large and 3 medium holly leaves under and between the flowers as shown in picture.

Hints:
These maybe be made in advance and stored until needed.
To adhere, cut a glue dot with the backing paper left on until ready to use.
Repositioning adhesive may also be use so the decoration can be saved after use.
They may also be used for cards, frames, bookmarks, and more!

New Cutting Tools at Custom Quilling

A collection of new fingertip knives have arrived at Custom Quilling, these little blades are awesome!

You hold the knife similar to how you hold a pencil by cradling your finger and "drive" the knife with your thumb and middle finger.
So far we have three types in stock, the first is the basic.

DT Heidi's review on this tool:

"I have been craft knife challenged until now. You put your index finger in the loop handle and just point and cut. It swivels around corners and curls around bends with no hopping, rolling or slipping. Best of all very little pressure is required."

Next is this rotary blade, the tiny rotary blade glides smoothly wherever your finger is pointing, to easily cut the thinnest and most delicate papers

Last but not least is the swivel blade, is ideal for cutting intricate designs and flowing shapes.

So if you are knife challenged like Heidi these may come to your rescue!

Husking Equals Quilling Fun!

Free Quilled Wheat Pattern

With autumn in the air I thought this the perfect pattern to share.

Supplies

1/8” quilling paper gold & tan
Cardstock in gold
Chalk in gold
Adhesive
Quilling Tool
Scissors

Card Preparation
Optional step: Cut then fold cardstock into desired card size. Cut an oval out of scrap paper; place the paper from which the oval was cut out on the card and lightly chalk the inside oval with gold. The edges of the card may also be chalked.

Spring Bunny Free Quilling Pattern

Last spring a mother bunny made her nest right in the middle of our front lawn.

Delighting all the children on the block but frustrating the CQ Staff, who sat daily at the window watching. Each time the lawn was mowed a basket covered the nest to avoid any possible causalities. Soon four bunnies emerged from the nest, entertaining all with their antics. Until one day they all hopped off in different directions never to return. The nest was cleaned out, the grass re-seeded, everything was back to normal, except we all missed those cute little bunnies amusing us!

So I thought you might like to make your own quilled bunnies...

Materials
1 Pom white (8 inches, 20 cm x 3/8 inches, 1 cm) forms body
1 Pom white (6 inches, 15 cm x 3/8 inches, 1 cm) forms head
2 strips white (3/4 inches, 2 cm x 3/8 inches, 1 cm) forms outer ears
2 strips pink (1/2 inches, 1 cm x 3/8 inches, 1 cm) forms inner ear
2 strips blue bead roll (1 inch, 2.5 cm x 1/8 inches, .3 cm) forms eyes
1 strips pink bead roll (1 inch, 2.5 cm x 1/8 inches, .3 cm) forms nose

Assembly
Fringe both white 3/8” strips, spread the cuts out with your thumb to achieve look of fur.
Glue small pom to larger pom by lightly gluing “fur” together.
Cut two white strips into ear shapes, repeat with pink making slightly smaller then gluing on top on the white.
Tuck ears in-between “fur” of small pom and glue.
Glue two blue beads rolls for eyes and one pink for nose to smaller pom. Cut end of cotton swab
gluing to side of larger pom for tail.

Quilling Sales at Shows

Here's an article I wrote a while back for the Custom Quilling Newsletter.
With the economy being what it is today, selling your art can mean extra income for you.

This time of the year many are participating in craft show, bazaars, demonstrations etc. so I thought I would share some my tips from when I did shows. It is important to remember your display is a reflection of you. If this is your first time setting up a booth, do a dry run at home then invite friends over to critique your display. Many shows are juried and require your area to be set up in a certain manner, pay very close attention to the rules you receive.
If using a table make sure to have a tasteful covering that goes to the ground. This space under the table if useful for storing supplies and stock. I found when arranging the table to have different heights, staging the table with the current season, i.e. now would be a small tree. If the space is available do a grouping so customers get an idea of how items would look together, than perhaps buying the whole grouping.
Check to see if electricity is offered, if not battery operated lights may be an option for those dark rooms. Do not forget the space behind the table, I used a folding screen system where larger picture could be hung.
Most shows permit set up hours before the doors open, so give yourself ample time for this. All your items must be carried to your location so choose your props very carefully many can serve a double propose. If you plan on doing several shows a small hand truck or wagon are VERY handy!
Have a guestbook set out for customers to sign, this is a great way to add to your mailing list. With preprinted pages for names, address, emails, also check off boxes if they are interested in classes, hosting a home show etc. I used two types of business cards, basic one set out on the table for all to take and more elaborate ones with quilling for customers who purchased or who wanted to order in the future. I also had my portfolio of work on hand for those who wanted to see it. Bring you projects along, people love to see you quill, I would just quill shapes placing them in a bowl for samples. I always had extra paper and pins for people to give it a try. This also came into play when someone would question the prices stating it was only paper and they could do it. I would politely hand them some paper and a hat pin offering them a try, most could not even start the shape without a mini lesson.
Do not sell yourself short, you are an artist, your work is worth the price you are asking. It has become a trend at shows for the customer to offer you a lower price, more so at the end of the day. There are many who only attend shows the last hour to do just this.

I love anything that saves me time, so you can well imagine how I feel about these two new punches that just arrived at...
Custom Quilling.

I haven't had time to use them in a project yet but I did test them.
They are so easy to punch, unlike a few of the other multi punches on the market.
